SC directs 5 states including Punjab to file affidavits on crop residue burning in a week

The Supreme Court has directed several states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, to submit affidavits outlining the steps being taken to control crop residue burning amid worsening air quality in the National Capital Region. The court expressed concern about the observed air quality index (AQI) being much worse than reported. The commission for air quality management previously reported a 40% decrease in straw burning cases, but the situation remains dire. Additionally, farmer activists in Punjab burned crop residue in protest.
